NEPTUNE The Israeli Consortium for Network Programming

The Neptune consortium consists of leading Israeli equipment vendors, service providers, and research institutions.
Neptune is funded under the "Magnet" (Generic Research) program of the Office of the Chief Scientist in the Israel Ministry of Economy.

The objective of Neptune, as the Israeli Consortium for Network Programming, is to develop efficient methods

to automate and programmatically manage service provider networks, irrespective of their underlying network technology.

The basic technologies used to achieve this goal are SDN (Software Defined Networking) and NFV (Network Functions Virtualization).

Neptune builds on SDN and NFV technologies that are being developed in various Standards Development Organizations, Industry Specification Groups, and Open Source Communities, and participates in such organizations when required.

The ability to program the behavior of service provider networks, rather than simply plan networks and upgrade them when required, leads to increased efficiency and flexibility, simplified deployment and operation and dramatically reduced expenses.

In particular, Neptune strives to dramatically reduce the time required to deploy new services and even completely new service types, to enable more efficient exploitation of network and computational resources, and to facilitate faster and more intelligent response to network events.

Neptune endeavors to achieve its objectives by research carried out by special teams in its member organizations. These members include network equipment vendors, a service provider, and academic teams from Israeli Universities.

Neptune research is funded by the Office of the Chief Scientist in the Israel Ministry of Economy, under its "Magnet" (Generic Research) program.
The project commenced research in June 2014, and is expected to run between 3 and 5 years.

Network Abstraction (SDN)

Resource Virtualization (NFV)

Technological Committee

The Neptune project performs its work in four working groups: Solutions (use cases), Network Abstraction (SDN), Resource Virtualization (NFV) And Orchestration, In addition, there is a Technological Committee, and at any given time there may be ad-hoc research teams.
